High humidity can feel downright terrible! When humidity levels rise, Lexington homeowners retreat indoors, seeking comfort from their air conditioners. While air conditioners do a fairly good job at controlling indoor humidity, sometimes outdoor humidity levels add too much moisture to the indoor air supply for the system to handle.
Here are a few problems which may happen when humidity levels rise, and how you can prevent them from affecting your indoor comfort.
- Frozen coils
High moisture levels can impact your evaporator coils, causing them to freeze up. If airflow through the system is restricted, from a dirty air filter or other issue, excess humidity can build up and cause the evaporator coil to freeze.
To prevent the evaporator coil from freezing during periods of high humidity, check and change your air filter regularly. While the filter manufacturer may recommend replacing it every three months, you may find the need to change it more frequently during the summer, due to heavier system use. Make sure airflow through the system is not restricted by opening all vents and inspecting the duct system, if possible, to see that no sections of ductwork have fallen or become disconnected.
- “Leaks”
As part of the cooling process, your air conditioner causes moisture in the air to condense into water and drain from the system. When humidity levels are high, there is more moisture to remove from the air, which creates more water. If the volume of water produced exceeds the capacity of the system’s drip pan, the water could spill over its edges, forming a puddle below the unit. A clog in the condensate drain could also cause this moisture to back up,
To prevent these leaks, inspect your condensate drain and drip pan regularly throughout the summer. Clear clogs in the drain and drain lines as needed, and empty your drip pan if water is overflowing.
